JFA Yachts delivers CANOA, a 50-Metre Explorer redefining the Standards of Long-Range Cruising

JFA Yachts is proud to announce the delivery of CANOA, a 50-metre Explorer motor yacht developed in collaboration with Humphreys Yacht Design. Designed and built to meet the highest standards of onboard comfort and energy efficiency, she advances long-range cruising to new frontiers.

The longest yacht ever built by the French shipyard, CANOA is the culmination of several years of development and research driven by a clear objective: to create a true exploration yacht capable of crossing the world’s oceans in optimal conditions while reducing its environmental footprint through innovative engineering solutions.

Developed by Humphreys Yacht Design, responsible for the naval architecture and exterior design, CANOA features a powerful and contemporary profile that is instantly recognisable. Behind her elegant lines lies extensive engineering expertise, with every design decision focused on delivering outstanding performance, efficiency, and reliability for the most demanding voyages.

Innovative Construction Designed for Performance

One of CANOA’s most significant innovations is her hybrid aluminium/composite construction—an unprecedented achievement for an Explorer yacht of this size.

Building on JFA Yachts’ longstanding expertise in aluminium construction, the yacht combines an aluminium hull with composite superstructures. This innovative approach significantly reduces weight aloft while lowering the vessel’s centre of gravity.

The benefits are numerous: enhanced stability, reduced fuel consumption, improved overall performance, and greater comfort for guests, both underway and at anchor.

The hull features a Fast Displacement design developed by Humphreys Yacht Design. Optimised through extensive hydrodynamic studies, it delivers exceptional efficiency across a wide speed range, enabling economical cruising during long passages while also providing higher speeds whenever conditions permit.

To maximise onboard comfort, CANOA is equipped with fin stabilisers and a gyroscopic stabilisation system, significantly reducing yacht motion both at sea and at anchor.

Hybrid Propulsion Engineered for Long-Range Cruising

Energy efficiency was a key driver throughout the development of the propulsion system.

CANOA features a parallel hybrid propulsion package combining two MTU diesel engines with electric motors. This configuration allows the crew to select the most suitable propulsion mode according to the cruising profile.

During harbour manoeuvres, low-speed cruising, or while at anchor, the electric motors provide exceptionally quiet operation while minimising vibrations and local emissions. For extended ocean passages, the diesel engines deliver the power required with optimised efficiency.

The yacht is also equipped with a substantial battery bank and solar panels that contribute to powering onboard systems while reducing overall energy consumption.

Another key feature is the Dynamic Positioning System (DPS), which enables the yacht to maintain her position automatically without dropping anchor whenever conditions allow, helping to protect sensitive seabeds and marine ecosystems.

Together, these technologies provide CANOA with a more responsible approach to yachting without compromising either range or performance.

A True Explorer Built to Push Boundaries

Beyond her technical innovations, CANOA has been conceived as a genuine exploration vessel.

With a range exceeding 5,000 nautical miles at 12 knots, she is capable of undertaking transoceanic passages and extended stays in remote regions far from conventional infrastructure.

Her spacious aft deck has been designed to accommodate two substantial tenders, providing exceptional versatility for logistics, watersports, and coastal exploration.

The interior is arranged across four decks and reflects the same uncompromising standards applied throughout the yacht’s technical development. Generous volumes, seamless circulation, and meticulous attention to detail define the living spaces, while extensive glazing creates a strong connection with the surrounding environment and floods the interior with natural light.

The interior design was created by m2atelier, based in Milan.

Technical spaces, storage capacities, and onboard equipment have all been carefully engineered to maximise autonomy and facilitate extended cruising operations.

Sea trials confirmed the yacht’s outstanding seakeeping capabilities as well as the flawless integration of all onboard systems, validating the engineering choices made throughout the project.

A New Milestone for JFA Yachts

The delivery of CANOA marks a significant milestone in JFA Yachts’ development.

The project brought together the full breadth of the shipyard’s expertise and further reinforces JFA Yachts’ position among the select European builders capable of delivering large, fully custom Explorer yachts designed for owners seeking exceptional autonomy, robustness, and build quality.

Frédéric Jaouen, President of JFA Yachts

“The delivery of CANOA represents the culmination of several years of work and an exceptionally ambitious project. Our objective was to build a true Explorer yacht capable of travelling far, for long periods, and in outstanding comfort, while incorporating innovative solutions to improve energy efficiency.

At 50 metres, CANOA is the longest yacht ever built by JFA Yachts. The combination of an aluminium hull and composite superstructures is a first for a yacht of this size and perfectly illustrates the expertise we have developed through our Long Island catamarans, as well as our commitment to innovation while remaining true to the values that define our shipyard: build quality, reliability, and bespoke craftsmanship.

This project demonstrates what can be achieved when a visionary owner, talented designers, and the shipyard’s teams work together towards a shared ambition. We are extremely proud of the result and delighted to see CANOA begin her life at sea.”

Tom Humphreys, Managing Director, Humphreys Yacht Design

“Our ambition from the outset was to create an Explorer yacht that combines genuine long-range capability with exceptional efficiency, refined seakeeping and a distinctive exterior that reflects her capabilities. By developing the naval architecture and exterior design together from day one, we were able to optimise every aspect of the yacht as a cohesive whole rather than as separate disciplines. Seeing the sea trial results so closely match our design predictions has been particularly rewarding and is testament to the collaborative approach taken by everyone involved in the project.”
